As we saw previously, one of the big advantages the North had during the Civil War was that it had many more people available for military service than did the South. Ultimately, this disparity in population was a key factor in the North winning.

Historians often describe the conflict as a war of attrition. Basically, they believe that the outcome of the war was determined by the fact that the South ran out of soldiers.
