In the wee hours of Fourth of July morning, there's an underground pit filled with 700 pounds of seasoned beef wrapped in foil and gunny sack just absorbing that one-of-a kind flavor. By the time the pit BBQ sandwiches are served in Hardtner's Achenbach Park at 4 p.m., the beef is fall-apart tender. Slathered with BBQ sauce, your first sandwich is free. You'll want to take some more home for later.
The little girls and boys all decked out in red, white and blue for the Little Firecracker contest are certain to put a smile on your face at the American Legion Hall at 9 a.m.
