After a career in corrections, he 'retires' to teach art

When Doug Compton was growing up in Buffalo, he gravitated toward the art of Norman Rockwell.

"I really liked his work. I'd go through the Saturday Evening Post when I was a kid and look at all the ads and illustrations," he said. "That's what I thought I wanted to be."

Finishing high school at Buffalo, he applied to Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

"They had an art program, and I heard it was a good one – a commercial art program," he said. That was his first exposure to art training.
