The number of U.S. veterans is declining, but the population is growing more diverse

Monday, Nov. 11, was Veterans Day. The day serves as a reminder of those still living who served in the nation's military. I posted the accompanying photo on Facebook a few years ago. It shows my older brother, Gene Derrickson, who enlisted in the army right out of high school. His time in the army fell between wars, and his overseas duty was in South Korea including several trips to the DMZ (demilitarized zone) between North and South Korea.
