Burlington senior Haven Stoner received the Kendrick Castillo Memorial Outstanding Student Finalist award at the Denver BEST robotics competition. The award, given to 13 students who served as a mentor and leader for their team, is in honor of a student from STEM School Highland Ranch in Colorado. Kendrick lost his life rushing a gunman at the school in 2019, saving countless other lives with his bravery.
The Burlington robotics team performed well at the local regionals at Alva, placing first in both events that they had. By winning first place, they were able to go to Denver to compete at regionals. They went to Denver from Dec. 6 through Dec. 9.
Fifteen students went to Denver, accompanied by three teachers: Jennifer Newlin, Misty McCullough and Isileli Ofiu. Some parents and community members were also there to cheer on the team. The competition took place at the Ed Robson Arena at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. The robotics team advanced to the semi-finals and placed seventh overall...
