Oklahoma Profile: Angie Debo – Part 2

Angie Debo, who moved to Oklahoma Territory from Kansas as a child in 1899, grew up to be one of our country’s more important historians of American Indians.

Debo received her Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma in 1933. The following year, the university’s press published her doctoral dissertation as “The Rise and Fall of the Choctaw Republic.”

Debo immediately began work on another manuscript that she saw as her most important work. Submitted to the University of Oklahoma Press, it was called “And Still the Waters Run: The Betrayal of the Five Civilized Tribes.”
