On Friday, Oct. 7, the Alva High School one-act crew headed to Fairview to compete in Regionals. After going slightly over time at the one-act festival they had attended the week before, the team worked together throughout the week to fix this issue and perfect the show.

When asked to summarize the plot of the play, Jake Ervin, who plays the main character Buddy Layman, said, "The storyline of the play mainly is about a boy named Buddy Layman, who I play in the play, and a preacher named C.C. Showers, played by Aaron (Erickson). Buddy Layman's mom died in the river, and he also almost drowned in the river and got brain damage. He now has a super big fear of water and when this new preacher comes to town, the preacher thinks he should help him with his problem. And the events of the story just occur from there."

The play went extremely well for Alva, and they did not have to wait long for the awards ceremony because they were the last show of the day. The Tech Award was received by Alva, along with two regional all-star cast members, Aaron Erickson and Jake Ervin. Justin Meyer, who plays a local farmer named Basil, and Kaleigh Henke who plays Buddy's older sister Jennie Mae, were both nominated but did not get picked for the cast. Ervin and Henke were both picked for all-star cast at the one-act festival hosted by Deer Creek High School on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

Overall, Alva got second place and will compete at State on Oct. 28-29.

If you would like to watch Alva's performance of "The Diviners," you are welcome on Thursday, Oct. 27, in the AHS auditorium at 7 p.m. Cost is by donation.
