Hughart crowned Miss Northwestern 2017

• Sanders takes home Outstanding Teen title

Kandi Hughart (left) was crowned as Miss Northwestern Oklahoma State University 2017 during the annual pageant Sunday. She will represent Northwestern at the Miss Oklahoma Scholarship Pageant in June. Emily Sanders (right) was crowned as the 2017 Miss Northwestern's Outstanding Teen, and Asbrie Heaton (center) was named Miss Northwestern's Star.

Kandi Hughart of El Reno was named Miss Northwestern Oklahoma State University 2017 during the annual Miss Northwestern Pageant on Sunday, Oct. 30. Emily Sanders of Kingfisher was crowned as Miss Northwestern's Outstanding Teen 2017.

Hughart, a senior who is double-majoring in psychology and health and fitness management, performed a fitness dance, and her platform was "Choose Happy – A Strong Mindset." She also won the People's Choice Award.

Sanders, homeschooled eighth grader, performed a vocal solo for the pageant, and her platform was "Write Your Own Story."

Hughart will receive a $1,500 tuition scholarship and a cash scholarship as Miss Northwestern. When Sanders attends college at Northwestern, she will receive a $1,500 tuition scholarship as well.

Asbrie Heaton, named Miss Northwestern's Star 2017, will accompany Hughart to the Miss Oklahoma Scholarship Pageant in Tulsa in June. Asbrie is the daughter of Breanna and Lance Heaton.


Miss Northwestern's first runner-up was freshman Shelbi Morland from Laverne. She will receive a $1,000 tuition scholarship and a cash scholarship.

Each runner-up in the teen category will receive a tuition scholarship if they choose Northwestern as their university of choice for higher education. Jody Webb from Lindsay was first runner-up for Miss Northwestern's Outstanding Teen and will receive a $1,250 tuition scholarship. Second runner-up and winner of the teen category for People's Choice Award was Landry Gaddy from Alva, who will receive a $1,000 tuition scholarship. Third runner-up Alyssa Payne from Norman will receive a $750 tuition scholarship. Fourth runner-up Tasia England from Woodward will receive a $500 tuition scholarship.


Contestants in both pageants were judged in talent, interview, lifestyle and fitness and onstage question categories. Each contestant in both the Miss and Teen categories will receive cash participation scholarship awards.

Katherine Blair, Waynoka freshman, and Meghan Webb, Alva freshman, also competed in the Miss Northwestern Pageant.

Liberty Bird of Alva, Abigail Trujilo of Burlington, Kaelin Clay of Idabel, Makenna Marchbanks of Blanchard, also were contestants in the teen contest.

Other contestants for the Miss Northwestern Star program were Sage Baird, daughter of Kristin and Trevor Baird; Joplin Bradt, daughter of Cara and Nick Bradt; and Evelyn Helmuth, daughter of Tia and Tyrel Helmuth.
