Weevils Baseball drops 2 on opening day

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team was defeated twice Saturday afternoon to open up the 2017 season by non-conference opponent Central Oklahoma by final scores of 2-1 and 4-3.

The Weevils (0-2) fell victim to two second inning errors that saw Central Oklahoma (2-0) take advantage and see two runs cross the plate in the first game. UAM cut the lead in half in the fifth inning however on a Brady Weiss single to left field to score Andres Rios.

In the second game, UCO broke the scoring first once again getting on the board in the second inning with a sacrifice to right field.

Arkansas-Monticello after trailing 2-0, evened game number two up after a Sean Wagner sac fly to right which scored Weiss. Drake Rowton provided the game tying RBI with a single to center field, bringing in Brian Ray.

The Bronchos pushed its lead out to 4-2 in the top of the seventh inning, as the Weevils begin to stage a comeback in the final inning of game two. Ray doubled to left center field to score Lathan McFadden and see UCO's lead brought down to 4-3.


Central Oklahoma was able to seal up its second straight victory over the Weevils as UAM hit into a double play to end the game at 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Arkansas-Monticello will conclude it's series with Central Oklahoma tomorrow, Sunday, February 5 at Weevils Field with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
