Hillcats' Postseason Chances End with Doubleheader Loss at No. 9 LCU

 


LUBBOCK, Texas – The Rogers State baseball team's postseason chances ended on Friday when the Hillcats dropped both games of a doubleheader at conference-leading and No. 9-ranked Lubbock Christian at Hays Field. RSU fell, 5-3, in game one and lost game two, 13-2.

The Hillcats needed to win all three games of the series to earn the fourth spot in the Heartland Conference Tournament, but the two losses and two victories from St. Edward's eliminated the Cats from making the tournament.

Lubbock Christian 5, Rogers State 3

The Chaps jumped on the Cats early by scoring three runs in the first two innings en route to the 5-3 victory in game one. RSU pulled to within one run at 4-3 with three runs in the sixth, but the host Chaps held on for the win.

LCU used RBI singles to plate each of its first four runs to gain the 4-0 edge. The Chaps started the game with an infield single in the first inning to plate one run for a 1-0 score.


In the second inning, a single to right added two more runs for the 3-0 lead after two innings.

The Chaps increased the margin to 4-0 in the fourth inning with a single up the middle.

The navy and red tried to rally with three runs in the sixth inning as the Cats posted four singles to start the frame. Matt Seubert and Sam Davison singled up the middle to open the inning. Bradley Degnan drove in Seubert with a single to right for a 4-1 score. After one run scored on a double play, Ismael Orozco scored Degnan with a single to the gap in left for a 4-3 margin.

LCU added an insurance run in the sixth inning with a double for a 5-3 advantage.


Ricky Contreras held the Hillcats to only one hit through five innings before the six hits in the sixth inning. He earned the win, moving to 9-1, going 6.2 innings with eight strikeouts and three earned runs.

Tim Luce started for RSU. In 5.1 innings, he allowed five runs on 10 hits. Justin Magstadt came in for two outs and totaled one strikeout.

Chris Miguel went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Lubbock Christian 13, Rogers State 2

The Chaps scored runs in each of their six innings up to bat to pull away for a 13-2 win in the nightcap.

LCU registered six runs in the first two innings to go in front 6-0 early. Two runs scored in the first with two RBI singles. In the second, the Chaps poured on four runs with three runs scoring on RBI singles. One more run scored on an RBI groundout. Another single in the third upped the score to 7-0.


In the fourth inning, LCU posted three runs to go up 10-0. The first run of the inning scored on a double to center field and the lead increased to 9-0 with a single to left. Another run came home with a sac fly to right for the 10-0 margin.

The fifth inning saw two more runs score for the Chaps. Another sac fly made it 11-0, and a single continued to add to the lead for a 12-0 advantage.

Miguel plated the two RSU runs with a two-run homer in the sixth inning for a 12-2 score.

LCU added another run in the sixth with a double for the final 13-2 margin.

Miguel finished 2-for-2 with two RBI in game two. The Cats tallied four hits in the game.

The Chaps totaled 19 runs with lead-off hitter Jaime Bustamente going 4-for-5 with two RBI.

Daniel Crooks of LCU went 6.0 innings with only two runs on four hits allowed with eight strikeouts. He moved to 8-1 on the season.

Spencer Bivens started for RSU going 2.1 innings with three strikeouts. Bivens allowed 11 hits and six earned runs. Josh Eclavea and Brock Knoten came in to pitch the final 3.2 innings.

The three-game series concludes tomorrow (May 6) with the regular season finale for the Hillcats at 1 p.m. in Lubbock, Texas. Video, audio and live stats will be provided.
