Burlington School receives financial gift from Reitz Foundation

• Junior/senior play Monday, Sept. 25; baked potato bar prior to 7 p.m. play

Senior Jaden Allen was crowned Miss Burlington 2017 and will represent her school next week at the Miss Cinderella Talent Show and Pageant (Sept. 28 and 29) during NWOSU's Homecoming.

Burlington School Board President Terry Graham called the regular September meeting of the board to order Monday night with all members present, including: Allison Armbruster, Aaron Smith, T. J. Rockenbach and Robert Hill. Others present were: Superintendent Glen Elliott, Principal Lane Pruett, and Minutes Clerk Tamre McGinnis.

Principal Pruett reminded the board that Burlington's Junior/Senior Class Play is next Monday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. First year music teacher Isileli Ofiu is directing the play he described as a comedy/drama. The play is "Penny for Your Thoughts," written by Scott Haan. The public is invited to join the junior class for a potato bar meal in the cafeteria prior to the play.

Senior student Jaden Allen was crowned Miss Burlington and will represent her school in the Miss Cinderella Talent Show and Pageant on the NWOSU campus next Thursday and Friday, Sept. 28 and 29, during the Ranger's Homecoming.

Superintendent Elliott told board members that the school received a $1,000 donation from the Lawilda Bishop Reitz Foundation. The board viewed a short video presentation from the foundation. Elliott said Bishop Reitz was a graduate of Byron High School. The superintendent said he learned the Reitz Foundation also gave $1,000 donations to the other schools in Alfalfa County.

After a recommendation from Superintendent Elliott, the board approved setting up a new activity account, #822 BPS Student Needs, and to transfer the Reitz $1,000 deposited in the miscellaneous activity account to Activity Fund #822 BPS Student Needs.


Other Burlington School Board Business

At the board meeting, members reviewed the Burlington School Accreditation Status for 2017-18. This shows Burlington was accredited with no deficiencies.

The board reviewed the schedule of school administrators salary and fringe benefits with no action needed.

The Elks' first basketball game of the season is Nov. 2 with the first home game Nov. 20. The board approved selling season tickets and senior citizen passes. They left gate prices and season passes at the same price as last year for the 2017/2018 basketball season.

Mica Andrews is Burlington School's new librarian this school year. She awaits the results of her OSAT testing. In the meantime the board held a short discussion regarding a waiver/deregulation for the library/media specialist for three years. As required to do by Oct. 1, the board approved the request for a waiver/deregulation for the library/media specialist.


Misty McCullough, counselor, presented and discussed the 2016/2017 ACT test results. The board discussed the results and the way it may affect the upcoming school report card with no action needed.

When asked about those ACT results, Elliott said, "The whole state is down and so were we." He explained the scores included sophomores who were taking the ACT for the first time and hadn't yet had some of the math classes and other classes. However, he said this prompted them to be aware and to make changes as needed to improve student scores.


McCullough, counselor, requested that testing records over five years old be destroyed (and EXPLORE 2008-2011). The board approved the destruction of those records listed.

Various items receiving board approval include: the 2017/2018 Federal Assurances and LEA Agreement; the August activity report; a contract for provision of education services from USD 605 SCKSEC for 2017/2018.

The board approved setting up a new Activity Fund, #823 Orient Conference, to handle dues and fees paid in by conference members and to handle such expenses as patches, trophies or flags.

Also approved were the encumbrances, change orders and warrants for 2018: General Fund: encumbrances $40,624.35, change orders $10.10, warrants $222,114.62; Building Fund: warrants $13,799.53; Child Nutrition Fund: warrants $5,417.85; and 2017 Reserves: General Fund warrants $1,784.68.


The internal activities committee for 2017/2018 received board approval. Committee members are Lane Pruett, Travis Bradshaw, Randy Turney, Kirsten Pruett, Ken Jones, Austin Hawkins and Isileli Ofiu.

The board approved the Safe School Committee and Healthy and Fit School Advisory committee with Lane Pruett as chairman and members Misty McCullough, Apryl Burleson, Jennifer Newlin, Kirsten Pruett, Ginger Cass, Randy Turney, Lindsey Morgan and Allison Armbruster. The Committee will also include one student each from the elementary and high school. Motion carried.

Elliott was approved as designee to review results of national criminal history record search.


The board reviewed the FR3 expenditure/revenue as of June 30, with no action needed.

Teacher Judy Elliott gave a short overview of nine policies for Title I to be reviewed by the board, which they approved:

• Federal Programs Complaint Policy, no changes from the current policy

• Conflict of Interest Policy

• Financial Management Procedures

• Fiscal Internal Control Policy

• Procurement Policy

• Compensation Policy

• Travel Policy

• School Parent and Family Engagement Policy (formerly called Parental Involvement Policy)

• Foster Children's Transportation Written Procedures

After meeting in executive session for 50 minutes to discuss the acquisition of real estate or future building projects the board took action. They accepted the quote from Wilson Construction in the amount of $19,400 for putting concrete on the floor of the show barn.


The board also accepted the quote from Ty Smith in the amount of $2,178 to replace the chain link fence around the old tennis court.

After a short discussion, the board voted to declare a list of old school property as surplus property and dispose of it properly.

Elliott's Superintendent's report consisted of a short review of the OSSBA/CCOSA Convention at the end of August. He said enrollment for the year to date is (41 high school, 119 grade school for a total of 160), with 123 qualifying for bus routes.

The OSSBA District 2 meeting will be in Burlington on October 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Elliott said and a copy of the warranty deed for the property at 208 Maple St. was received.

Giving his principal's report, Pruett said cross country has done well in medals in the three meetings where they've competed. At the Timberlake meet, Burlington students took the top three places. They were: Brooke Whittet, first place; Savanah Granadas, second place; and Karlie Heatherman, third place.

The robotics team attended the Northwestern Robotics kick-off. Yearbook celebrated DOT day to go with the yearbook theme this year. DOT day came about from a book called "The Dot," by Peter H. Reynolds. The book talks to kids about making their mark by being confident, courageous and creative.

Pruett said the Burlington FFA officers also attended and participated in the funeral services for former Burlington FFA teacher L.E. Castle, a longtime resident of Jet.
