Storm defense shines in 76-54 rout vs NWOSU

January 12, 2018

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene held Northwestern Oklahoma State to a season-low 25 percent shooting from the field, as it never trailed in a 76-54 win on Thursday night.

The 22-point win for the Crimson Storm (6-6, 4-4 GAC) is the largest margin of victory of the season and the largest since the 72-42 win against Southern Arkansas last January. SNU forced the Rangers (7-6, 3-4 GAC) into 19 turnovers, as the defense was smothering all night.

SNU shot 37 percent from the field, and 42 percent from three-point range. Adrienne Berry led the way with 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting, while also going 3-for-6 from downtown. Irene Perez added 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists while Sidney Carolina scored 11 points and pulled in five rebounds.

Julia Schwake was the spark off the Storm bench, as the freshman knocked down a season-high three triples on the night. Abby Niehues was dominant in the paint, as she posted seven points, 12 rebounds, and five blocks.

The Storm jumped off to a 14-2 run in the first quarter, courtesy of two three-pointers from Carolina. They hit six threes in the period, en route to a 29-15 lead at the end of the first. It was the most points the Storm had scored in a quarter all season.

The offense cooled off in the second quarter, but the Storm defense began to heat up, as they forced six turnovers and held the Rangers to just 22 percent shooting from the field. SNU took a 44-30 lead into halftime behind 11 points from Carolina, and 10 each from Berry and Niehues.

The Rangers started the third quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the Storm lead to 44-37, but Berry responded with a three and a layup in transition to push the lead back to double-digits. SNU then proceeded to go on a 15-1 run to extend their lead to 59-40 through three quarters. Schwake knocked down two threes, while Berry led the way with seven points in the period.

Also in the third quarter, SNU held NWOSU to just 25 percent shooting and forced six turnovers. They were able to increase their lead to 28 at one point in the fourth, as the Storm's defense proved to be too much for the Rangers. Southern Nazarene is now 5-1 on the year inside the Sawyer Center.
