OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A man who worked as a security officer for a church in south Oklahoma City is now facing an attempted grand larceny charge after the ministry's leaders set up a sting that prosecutors allege caught him stealing from the church collection plate.

The Oklahoman reports that 52-year-old James Lee Smith is accused of stealing three envelopes of cash from Life.Church South Oklahoma City. Officials said Tuesday that he hadn't yet been arrested.

A police affidavit shows church staff members conducting the investigation placed four donation envelopes into a collection plate on Dec. 17 that contained small GPS tracking devices. The affidavit says Smith was spotted on surveillance camera footage taking the collection envelopes, which typically contain cash donated to the church, and placing them into his pants pocket.
