SWOSU Baseball Splits Saturday with Cameron

February 4, 2018

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball earned their first win of the 2018 season 6-4 over Cameron in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, but couldn't hold on to their lead in the rubber match and eventually fell 11-10 to the Aggies in the nightcap.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday at home in some midweek action when they welcome Northeastern State for a single nine-inning game set to start at 1 pm in Weatherford.

Game 1

SWOSU 6, Cameron 4

Box Score (html)

Chase Duncan got the offense going early in the second inning, knocking a two-run home run over the left field fence that gave SWOSU an early 2-0 lead. Cameron responded in the fourth, taking advantage of a leadoff error and eventually tacked on three runs – all unearned – to grab the 3-2 lead.

Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Peyton Maddox stepped into the box and drove the left center gap for a triple which brought in Brady Burtner all the way from first base with the go-ahead score.

An inning later, SWOSU added an insurance run courtesy of Bryan Miranda's base running efforts. Miranda was hit by pitch to get on base and then stole second to get into scoring position. Alex Pimentel, the next batter up, wasted no time in delivering the RBI single to score him and give the Dawgs some breathing room.

Jesse Lee came in for the final three outs and after a four-pitch walk, settled in to get a double play ball and eventually the save.

Drew Grubb got the start on the bump and went 4.0 innings and struck out seven batters in the process. He allowed three unearned runs, but scattered just two hits in his time on the mound. Brendan Peitsmeyer (3.0 IP) and Cooper Cantwell (1.0 IP) made relief appearances, bridging the gap between Grubb and Lee who came in to close.

Offensively, SWOSU finished with seven hits by seven different players but none were as clutch as Maddox's two-out seventh inning triple.

Game 2

Cameron 11, SWOSU 10

Box Score (html)

After scoring at least two runs in each of the first four innings, SWOSU led 9-4 but couldn't keep the Aggie offense quiet the entire way. Cameron scored two in the fifth and five in the sixth to take the 11-9 lead.

Down to their final three outs, the Bulldogs made a run at tying the game when Maddox walked to spark the inning. A Marion McLean single kept things going, but SWOSU's rally ran out of juice just one run away from the tie. Pimentel singled with two outs which plated Maddox, but Rafael Villela's hit down the first base line was fielded and the game finally came to an end.

The rubber match saw 24 hits between the two teams and a combined 21 runs. Both Miranda and Pimentel had 4-for-5 days at the plate in the night cap, while Maddox hit his first career home run in a Bulldog uniform.

Gabe Jacobo got the start on the mound and pitched 4.0 innings before giving way to the bullpen. He allowed six runs and struck out six while walking just two. Garret Gaunt (1.0 IP), Tyler Tuck (faced two batters), Jesse Lee (1.0 IP), and Justin Moreno (1.0 IP) also made appearances, allowing five runs between the four arms.
