Bulldogs Shutout Riverhawks

February 9, 2018

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Behind seven scoreless innings on the mound from Cooper Cantwell and some early offensive scoring, SWOSU moved back to an even record to start the season following a 6-0 shutout of Northeastern State on Wednesday.

Cantwell (W, 1-0) scattered five hits while striking out six and walking only one. He found himself in nearly no real trouble in his outing, facing only two situations with runners in scoring position and worked out of both situations unscathed.

Jose Laboy (0.2 IP) and Brendan Peitsmeyer (1.1 IP) came on in relief for Cantwell and combined to throw the final two innings – both of which holding NSU to no runs in the process.

At the plate, SWOSU scored five of their six runs and collected eight of their 11 hits in the first two innings. Bryan Miranda led the game off with a double that set the tone for the game, and shortly after both Daniel Richardson and Connor Duer followed suit with doubles of their own.

In the second inning, the Bulldogs used three consecutive singles from Marion McLean, Miranda, and Alex Pimentelat the start of the inning to do their damage. SWOSU got three runs in the first inning and another two in the second to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

From there, Cantwell utilized his lead by throwing strikes and pitching ahead of batters – keeping the Riverhawk offense at bay for much of the afternoon. The offense added one more run in the seventh inning, but it was all but insurance for the pitchers and defense who were putting continuous zeros on the NSU side of the scoreboard. No errors were committed in the game by the Bulldog defense and SWOSU ended up outhitting NSU 11-6 on the day.

Brooks Benson finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Miranda and Duer both had 2-for-4 showings at the dish.

SWOSU (2-2) will now face a tough challenge this weekend when they travel to San Angelo, Texas for a three-game series with No. 20 Angelo State beginning on Friday, February 9th.
