February 18, 2018

Four men have been charged in connection with a fight at the Nite Lite bar early Sunday morning, Jan. 28. The bar is located at 1220 Lane St. just south of the Alva city limits. An injured man was taken by ambulance to the hospital following the altercation.

According to court papers, officers from the Woods County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene about 2 a.m. Deputy Ethan McOsker was told several unidentified individuals described as Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU) football players were involved in the fight. One individual, Garrett Scott Lagan, was transported by ambulance to Share Medical Center in Alva.

McOsker went to the hospital where he spoke with Lagan. McOsker observed obvious scrapes and bruising on Lagan’s face and the back of his head. McOsker states that Lagan said he saw a man fighting with several individuals and attempted to break up the fight. One of the individuals punched him in the face, and then a group of men from the crowd attacked him knocking him to the ground where they continued to punch and kick him.

McOsker obtained video from the Nite Lite about 11:30 p.m. He and Undersheriff Keith Dale reviewed the video on Monday afternoon. Dale contacted NWOSU head football coach Matt Walters. The coach was out of town but agreed to meet with them as soon as he returned to Alva to try to identify the individuals in the video.

Walters told Undersheriff Dale that Corey Demond Hornbeak Jr. admitted to coaching staff he had kicked someone in the head during the fight at the Nite Lite just outside the entrance to the bar. In his affidavit, McOsker states Hornbeak can be seen in the video wearing a Chicago Bulls jersey; Lagan can be seen lying face down just outside the bar entrance while being kicked in the head. Hornbeak was dismissed from the team and left Alva before he could be interviewed.

On Thursday, Feb. 1, at 10 a.m. Undersheriff Dale spoke with Edward Baley Garza. The affidavit states Garza admitted his involvement in the fight but invoked his right to an attorney before giving any further statement.

On Friday, Feb. 2, at 5:30 p.m. Walters arrived at the sheriff’s office to review the video. The affidavit states he identified the remaining two individuals in the video seen punching and kicking Lagan while he was on the ground as Joshua Riley Parton and Kentrez Trevon Bell. In the video, according to the affidavit, Garza, Parton and Bell can be seen punching and kicking Lagan as he lay face down inside the entrance of the bar.

McOsker and Dale interviewed Parton about 6 p.m. Parton identified himself in the video and admitted to his involvement in a voluntary statement.

At 6:30 p.m. McOsker and Dale interviewed Bell who also identified himself in the video. He gave a voluntary statement admitting to his involvement in the fight.

On Feb. 9 the four men were charged in Woods County District Court with assault and battery, a misdemeanor. This crime is punishable by imprisonment up to 90 days or a fine up to $1,000, or both.

Those charged are identified as: Corey Demond Hornbeak Jr., 19, of Oklahoma City; Kentrez Trevon Bell, 19, of Ament Hall in Alva; Edward Baley Garza, 20, of Coronado Hall in Alva; and Joshua Riley Parton, 21, of Alva.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Hornbeak. The other three men have been served, have posted appearance bonds and have their next appearance in court on March 13.
