Burlington School News: Mentoring program is a long-standing reading tradition

Senior Jazmine Vest mentors fourth-grade student Laura Brown in reading.

Every Wednesday during Stop, Drop & Read (SDR), you will find older students and younger students paired throughout the school reading together. The Burlington mentoring program provides reading assistance to the fourth- and fifth-grade students. Upperclassmen encourage and help the younger students by pronouncing words that are too hard for them to read. Mentoring also helps the students interact with one another.

Mentoring is organized by Student Council sponsor Jennifer Newlin, who also assigns the mentors to the younger students. The program also helps the elementary students find a role model and the upper classmen are given an opportunity to practice responsibility when interacting with the younger students. Many of the older students serving as mentors were once young reading students who had mentors themselves.

The mentoring program started more than ten years ago in the English department and was reinstated by the student council and continues today.
