Nearly 1,500 acres burn east of Kiowa Friday

Kiowa, Kansas, Fire Chief Roger Robison said he received a call from a resident at 2:02 p.m. Friday about a grass fire east of Kiowa. He said the raging fire ended up burning 1,300 to 1,500 acres and was three-and-a-half miles long.
The chief said that the fire started just east of Riverview Cemetery at the city's trees and clippings pile. Robison said the pile was still smoldering from the last fire although it had been totally covered and mounded. The high winds from the west gusting to a reported 50 mph are believed to have unleashed some of the embers.
