PERRY, Okla. – The No. 17 Alva Goldbugs reached the championship game of the Hector Tovar Invitational Tournament on Friday with an extra-inning win over No. 15 Perry, 5-2, after plating three runs in the eighth inning.

Unfortunately for the Goldbugs the bat went cold in the final game on Saturday as No. 5 Jones handed the Bugs their first shutout of the season, 10-0, in four innings.

Alva moves its record to 8-5 this season. The Bugs will be back in action Tuesday on the road against No. 9 Chisholm at 5 p.m, before returning home for a rematch against Jones on Thursday. First pitch against Jones is scheduled for 5 p.m. as well.

In Saturday's game against the Jones Longhorns, the Bugs only reached base safely in four at bats, with Jacob Faulkner, T.W. Beiswanger, Dalton Rose and Morgan Cook each singled. Alva had its best chance to score a run in the top of the first as Faulkner and Beiswanger had back-to-back singles with one out.

After a strikeout ended the Bugs threat in the top of the inning, the Lornhorns put up four in the bottom of the first. They added three in the home half of the second, two in the third and the final run came in the fourth to seal the run-rule victory

Alva reached the championship game after scoring three runs in an extra-inning showdown against the host team Perry.

The Bugs started the scoring in the first half inning of the game when Zeth Warren turned a leadoff double into a run two batters later on a Maroon error. Stanton Earnest then doubled in Faulkner from first base to give his team a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, a walk and a double by the Maroons turned in to runs to equalize the score at two runs apiece. Alva was able to get runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings, but were unable to break the tie, allowing the game to go into extras.

It didn't take long in the extra frame for the Bugs to strike as Beiswanger started the eighth with a double to left. With one out, Max Parsons reached on an error by the Maroon shortstop, with allowed Beiswanger to score to make it 3-2.

Jacob Faulker (2) eyes a base runner at first base before delivering a pitch to his brother Kory behind the plate in the third inning on Saturday.

Dalton Hess stepped in and drove in Parsons with a double to left, and Hess ultimately scored a little later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Beiswanger entered the game in the sixth inning on the mound and didn't allow a hit, striking out two of his five batters in the bottom of the eighth to end the game and earn the win. Cade Madsen struck out four batters and allowed just four hits in five innings of work, before giving way to Beiswanger on the mound.

Every Goldbug in the lineup in the quarterfinal game against Perry had a hit in the game.
