Hillcats Take 1 of 2 to End 4-Game Series in a Spilt at St. Edward's

 


AUSTIN, Texas – The Rogers State baseball team rallied to take game two of a doubleheader for the second straight day to win one of two games and split the four-game weekend series at St. Edward's at Lucian-Hamilton Field. After falling 4-0 in game one, RSU responded with a 6-2 victory in game two.

The Hillcats moved to 19-15 on the season and 4-7 in Heartland Conference play.

SEU 4, RSU 0

SEU's Tanner Lawson pitched a complete game four-hitter in game one to give the host Hilltoppers a 4-0 victory. He posted seven strikeouts and allowed only four singles in the seven-inning game one.

With the strong pitching of Lawson, the Hilltoppers used four runs to get the win. SEU started with two runs in the first inning on two RBI singles to go in front 2-0 early.

An error brought in another run in the fifth, and the final tally scored in the sixth on a double to left center for the final 4-0 margin.


Drew Van Winkle started and went 4.2 innings in game one. He gave up three runs and six hits. Hunter Johnson came in for the final 1.1 innings with one strikeout and two hits allowed.

Zack Mann, Grant Farris, Brooks Douglass and Brendan Griffith all went 1-for-3 at the plate.

RSU 6, SEU 2

After facing a 2-0 deficit early in game two, the Hillcats rallied with five runs in the final three innings for a 6-2 victory in game two.

Trailing 2-1 in the seventh inning, the navy and red plated three runs to take a 4-2 advantage. Sam Casinellitied the score at 2-2 with a fielder's choice to bring home Garrett Hall. Bradley Degnan gave RSU a 4-2 edge with a single to right to score Casinelli and Matt Seubert.


The Cats weren't done as they totaled two more runs in the ninth inning. Farris plated the first run with a single to right, and Blake Chiaramonte scored on a wild pitch for the final 6-2 score.

TJ Giselbach of SEU gave the Hilltoppers an early 2-0 lead with a sac fly in the first and an RBI single in the third.

RSU got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a Brendan Griffith single to score Chiaramonte to pull the Cats to within one run at 2-1 before the late rally.

Chiaramonte and Hall went 2-for-4 at the plate, and Degnan finished with a game-high three RBI.

AJ Deason started in game two, going 3.0 innings. Preston Whitten picked up the win in 4.0 innings of relief. He allowed only one hit with two strikeouts. Brock Knoten closed out the final two innings and earned the save.

The Hillcats return home for eight-straight Heartland Conference contests at the Diamond Sports Complex. The stretch starts with a four-game series against UA Fort Smith next weekend in Claremore. RSU and UAFS open on Friday (April 13) at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader. Live coverage will be available on the Hillcat Network and on 91.3 FM.
