April 15, 2018

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Tiger softball team completed a day one sweep of Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon 2-0 and 7-0.

For the first time in seven years, Ouachita (17-22, 13-19 GAC) completed a shutout sweep of their opponent. The last time the Tigers achieved this feat was on March 19, 2011 against Delta State.

Marissa Butler (Plano, Texas) was the star of the day as she threw her first career no-hitter on Saturday afternoon. The junior pitched her seventh complete game of the season and her first shutout of the year.

Northwestern Oklahoma State (11-27, 10-22 GAC) is now riding a four game losing streak, their second longest losing streak of the season.

Game One: Ouachita 2, NWOSU 0

The first game of the afternoon was a pitchers dual between the two schools as runs came at a premium.

Ouachita scored the opening run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Madison Crosby (Sheridan, Ark.) singled to right field to begin the inning, Kelly Powell (Flower Mound, Texas) then singled down the left field line to put runners on first and second. Freshman Sloane Precure (Canyon, Texas) came to the plate next and hit an RBI single into left field.

Butler's perfect game was broken up in the top of the fourth inning. Madi Parrott hit a scorcher down the left field line, Tiger third baseman Samantha Ortiz made the play initially but was unable to secure the ball as it bounced out of her glove for the error.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Gabby Gonzalez (Alice, Texas) hit an RBI double to centerfield to bring in the Tigers second run of the game.

Butler sent the Rangers down in order in the top of the seventh to complete the no-hit bid.

Game Two: Ouachita 7, NWOSU 0

The Ouachita offense came alive in the nightcap pounding out 14 hits during the game. In the bottom of the second inning, Paige Purifoy (Farmington, Ark.), Precure and Sarah Johnson (Mount Vernon, Texas) all had RBI knocks for the Tigers. Ouachita pounced out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back.

Johnson struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning, this time the senior catcher hit a two-run homerun into the trees beyond the left field wall. With a 6-0 lead, the Tigers were not done as Powell came through with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.

The Rangers threatened in multiple innings but the Tigers pitching staff was able to prevent the runners from scoring.

Johnson was the top hitter for the Tiger offense in game two. The senior went 3-for-4 with a homerun and three RBI's.

Kelsey O'Brien (Denton, Texas) picked up her third win of the season after 5.2 innings of shutout softball.

Ouachita and Northwestern Oklahoma State will conclude their four game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
