April 18, 2018

Kiowa’s Tree Board applied for and received the 2017 National “Tree City USA” award. Board member Carra Mayberry said this is the 22nd consecutive year for the City of Kiowa to receive this honor.

Mayor Ron Rohr signed a proclamation declaring April 27 as Kiowa’s Arbor Day. FFA student volunteers help plant trees around town that day.

Kiowa’s Tree Board recommends planting some large trees in Progress Park. The city council said they will pay for those more expensive trees from the city budget. The Tree Board requested only $200 from the city for 2018 projects, but the council voted to give them $300.

Since inception, the tree board has planted 194 trees and bushes, valued at about $6940.

The following tree board members were reappointed to a term from 2018-2021: Fred Gillig, president; Sharon Kimmell and Mike McGinley.

Mayberry said the tree board planted a tree with a plaque in Progress Park in memory of their 20 year president Melvin Conrad.
