Hillcats Reach 30 Wins with Sweep of In-State Rival NSU

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Rogers State softball team reached 30 wins for the first time since 2013 with a doubleheader sweep of in-state rival Northeastern State on Tuesday (April 17) at RiverHawks Park. RSU moved to 30-15 overall with 5-2 and 5-1 victories over NSU.

The navy and red put up the first three runs of game one, including two runs in the first inning, en route to the 5-2 win.

Freshman Allie McFetridge drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single to right center to score lead-off batter Merissa Smith. Danelle Day made it 2-0 in the second inning with an RBI on a fielder's choice.

In the third inning, RSU added one run when Tailee Reding doubled down the line, advancing Smith to third base and an error in the outfield allowed Smith to come home for the 3-0 margin.

The RiverHawks pulled to within one run at 3-2 after a solo home run and an error, but McFetridge knocked out a two-run homer to left to give RSU some insurance runs and increase the lead to 5-2.


Senior Alex Brake started in the circle of game one and pitched 5.0 innings. She totaled seven strikeouts with five hits and one earned run allowed. Freshman Andrea Morales went the final 2.0 innings and posted three strikeouts. She picked up the save.

The Hillcats registered 10 hits with the top four spots in the order totaling nine hits. McFetridge went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Reding was 3-for-4, and Smith finished 2-for-4.

In the nightcap of the twinbill, RSU plated one run in each of the first five innings to cruise to the 5-1 victory and a doubleheader sweep.


Day opened the game two scoring by driving in a run with a fielder's choice that scored Reding in the first inning. The lead doubled to 2-0 in the second inning when Taylor Santistevan got in a rundown, but Katelyn Gamble scored from third before Santistevan was tagged out.

RSU continued to score runs in the top of the third when Day drove in Smith with a single to centerfield to make it 3-0.

NSU totaled its only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single for a 3-1 score.

The Cats weren't done as Reding brought in a run with a single to center, plating Rylee DeLozier, to up the RSU edge to 4-1.

Day capped the scoring for the navy and red with a solo home run, her third RBI of the game, to extend the advantage to 5-1.


Brake earned her second win of the doubleheader in the circle, going 5.2 innings with only five hits and one run allowed. She tallied three strikeouts. Morales closed out the game for her second save of the day. The freshman went 1.1 innings with one strikeout.

Day registered a 2-for-4 performance in game two with three RBI. Smith was 2-for-3.

RSU reached 30 wins for the first time since the 2013 season when the Cats finished 40-19. This is the eighth 30-win season in the 13-year history of RSU softball.

The Hillcats return home for five straight games, starting with a three-game Heartland Conference series against Lubbock Christian on Thursday and Friday. RSU and LCU start with a doubleheader on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Diamond Sports Complex.
