Goldbugs blast Watonga in Alva

April 20, 2018

ALVA, Okla. – The No. 17 Alva Goldbugs had no problem rolling past Watonga on the diamond Tuesday evening at Glass Family Field at Myers Stadium as they dominated in a 16-2 victory.

In the game that was forced to be moved due to an issue at Crenshaw Field, the Goldbugs scored all 16 runs in the first inning. It was their highest single inning output in recent years, and the third most runs scored in a game this season.

The Alva offense has scored ten or more runs in four of its last five games. The Bugs have reached the double digit run total 13 times this season.

It wasn’t until the Goldbugs had scored 11 runs before Watonga recorded the first out of the home half of the first inning. During that big stretch, Zeth Warren and T.W. Beiswanger each picked up a double in their first at bat and a single in their second.

Beiswanger’s double scored both Warren and Jacob Faulker, before he scored on a single from Max Parsons. Dalton Rose then stepped in and singled to left to drive in Stanton Earnest, and with Braeden Cook at the plate, Dalton Hess scored on a passed ball to make it 6-0.

Carson Gaisford singled in Rose, Warren plated Dominic Minjares on his second single and after Faulkner’s second walk of the inning, Beiswanger drove in Warren with a single back up the middle. Finally, Watonga picked up their first out on an Earnest groundout, but he was still able to bring home Faulkner to extend the lead to 11-0.

Parsons came to the plate with one out and continued the onslaught as he singled in Beiswanger, and eventually scored three batters later on a double by Braeden Cook.

Gaisford picked up his second hit of the game with a big double to right field that brought home two runs, before scoring on an error for the run No. 16 in the inning.

Warren ultimately ended up with three hits in the first inning alone as he drove in a run and scored two times. Beiswanger had four runs batted in on his two hits in the first inning and scored both times he came to the plate.

Gaisford finished with two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Rose had a pair of hits, two RBI and scored twice. Parsons drove in a runner on his two hits and crossed the plate two times.

The Bugs improved to 16-11 heading into their own tournament this weekend. After a pair of games on Thursday against Crossings Christian and Guymond, the Goldbugs will take on Liberal (Kansas) at 10 a.m. on Friday, and face Blackwell later in the afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
