Rangers bested in non-conference action

ENID, Okla. – Northwestern Oklahoma State university dropped a disappointing non-conference matchup Tuesday night as they fell 14-2 to #5 Oklahoma Wesleyan (NAIA, KCAC). The Eagles powered their way to 17 hits in a seven-inning contest originally scheduled for nine, while the Ranger offense was stymied while being held to just five knocks.

It was Northwestern Alumni Foundation's annual Hot Dog and Apple Pie event and the ballpark was packed with fans both old and young.

Things got off to a tough start for starter Cole Jackson as the redshirt junior was tagged for seven runs in the top of the 1st, lasting just two-thirds of an inning after giving up six hits and walking two. Jackson was lifted in favor of lefty Ryan Marcoccia who got the third out of the frame, but not before the Eagles had managed to build a 7-0 advantage.

Finding themselves in an early hole, the Rangers got on the board in the 2nd when Luis Mendoza followed up a Justin Bundy double with an RBI single to left to cut the deficit to six.

Oklahoma Wesleyan would go on to add runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th to extend their lead to 12-1, including a stretch of three triples in two innings, all finding the right-center gap.

Bundy (2-for-2, HR, 2B) continued his solid day at the plate in the 5th when he took a first pitch fastball the other way for a solo home run, wrapping his sixth of the season around the left-field foul pole.

The Rangers emptied the stables in this one, throwing seven different arms over the run-rule shortened game, with Jackson, Marcoccia, Brendan Yates, Nick Llorente, Brandon Nesseralla, Sean Rydell and Bryson Wrobel all seeing time on the hill.

Senior Nathan Weatherly notched his first hit of the season in the bottom of the 7th off OKWU starter Joe Gray. After falling behind quickly 0-2, Weatherly worked the count back full before roping a hard liner past the diving shortstop and into left field.

Oklahoma Wesleyan hung on to win 14-2.
