Alva man charged with assault, kidnapping

April 29, 2018

An Alva man is facing felony charges after police talked to a woman who said she was in fear for her life.

According to court documents, Waynoka police contacted Alva police on April 20 asking them to check a residence. Waynoka police said they had been contacted by a woman’s family who said the woman called for help and reported being assaulted. The Alva officer was unable to locate anyone at that address.

On Sunday, April 22, at approximately 7:50 a.m. Alva Police Officer Timothy Clapp was dispatched to the alley of the 1100 block of Oklahoma Boulevard about a scared female. He made contact with Regina Adams and saw she had three packed travel bags. She told Clapp she was scared for her life and wanted to get out of town.

According to the affidavit in the case, Adams told Clapp that on April 16 her boyfriend David Tuman beat her up. She showed him bruising on her left eye and nose and bruising on the left side of her upper chest area. Adams said Tuman told her multiple times he would kill her if she left or called for help.

In a statement, Adams wrote, “The next morning he seen how bad I was and said he was sorry and to get my a** up and get the blood cleaned up. He wouldn’t let me leave; he said if I tried to leave or call police he would kill me.” Adams said Tuman would not let her out of the house and lied to people, telling them she was in Wichita, Kansas.

She said Tuman had been drinking all night and was asleep so she was able to pack her bags and leave the house, walking a half block before calling the police. Clapp contacted Northwest Crisis Center to provide Adams with a ride out of town.

Clapp, along with Officer Sean Farris and Deputy Adam Honeyman, went to Tuman’s address where he was asleep. Adams told them the back door was unlocked so they went inside and found him asleep. When officers woke Tuman and told him why they were there, he said he did not beat Adams and she was in Wichita at the time. He was taken to the Woods County Jail to be booked on charges.

A search of court records showed Tuman was charged with domestic assault and battery in April 2015 and again in March 2018.

Felony charges were filed on April 23 against David Wayne Tuman, 50, for domestic abuse – assault and battery and for kidnapping. The domestic abuse charge carries a penalty of imprisonment up to four years or a fine of $5,000. The kidnapping charge is punishable by imprisonment for up to 20 years.

Tuman’s bail was set at $25,000 per count or a total of $50,000. His next court appearance is on May 6.
