Alva schools hire several teachers for next year

Alva Supt. Steve Parkhurst announced as OASA District 2 Superintendent of the Year for 2018. Also, Tiim Argo was announced as District 2 Assistant Superintendent of the year. Board President Jane McDermott said Mr. Parkhurst was chosen from 20 competitors. A banquet honoring the pair will be held at the Embassy Suites Conference Center in Norman June 5-7, 2018.

Superintendent Steve Parkhurst said the district is still in good financial shape. The total investments of all unspent funds is deposited in local banks at interest rates ranging from 0.75 to 2.2. The total is $12,007,200.31. The district also has an end of month cash balance of $795,124.92 with outstanding warrants of $79,800.84. This gives total monies of $12,515,324.39.

In comparing this year to last year, Supt. Parkhurst reported the district has encumbered $883,005.36 more. In warrant comparison, the total of FY 2017 was $7,339,835.30 compared to FY 2018 of $7,849.294.64, an increase of $509,459.34.

The Revenue Comparison has some red numbers. The general fund is lagging behind in FY18 Revenue at $9,772,617.32. The FY17 number was $10,545,948.41, which represents a decline of $773,331.09. Gross Production Tax revenue still is good at $248,730.41. The district has collected 99% of 2018 estimated revenue with two months to go in the fiscal year. The district is the caretaker of all the various student activity funds. The balance of that account is $309,384.20.


Superintendent Parkhurst announced the district has donated five HP Probook computers to the Northwest Family Services Office.

The superintendent said the number of lunches served is higher this year, while breakfast is down. The average number of lunches are 662.47 and the average number of breakfasts are 250.60. This is the March 2018 report. For the year, lunch revenue is as follows: Breakfast/Lunch?Milk/Ala Carte $98,700.62, Big Five $14,511.49 and Federal Reimbursement $170,096.79.


The district is spending $78,000 for an additional modular classroom building at Washington School. The superintendent said this will allow all the pre-K classes to be at the same location.

The district is having to make repairs to one of the large over-the-road Van Hool buses in the amount of $4,446.46. The large transport buses are district-owned whereas the other route buses are leased.

A freezer went bad at Alva High School and a replacement was quickly obtained from Sights and Sounds in Alva at a cost of $749.99.

Several items were declared surplus from Washington School. The list included a Brother Laser Fax and six telephone desk sets.

A fundraiser request was approved for the AMS cheerleading squad of eight students. Their goal is to raise $2,000 for additional and replacement cheerleading uniforms and cheer mats. Another fundraiser for the high school cheerleading squad of 12 to 15 students will be a fan cloth apparel sale. The students hope to raise $2,000.


Several new employees attended the Monday night meeting: Ruth Petsche – pre-K, Teresa Lloyd – second grade, Morgan Woodruff –special ed, and Leigh Brenna Heaton – AMS science. Brandi Brown was employed as a cheerleading coach and Megan Stratton as softball coach. Chesni Thomas, a previous employee, was hired as a special ed teacher.

A resignation was accepted from Bruce Dollar as golf coach.

Last year, the Alva district paid the coaches for the summer sports camps. This allowed registration fees for students to be only $10 each, allowing many more to be able to participate. The maximum amount any one family will have to pay is capped at $50. That plan was approved for this summer.


Steve Gale will once again teach driver's ed in the summer. One session will be from May 25 to June 1. Another session is scheduled for June 12–22. The tuition will be $175 per student. There are a limited number of spaces available so it is wise to call the superintendent's office and reserve a space.

The following teachers were hired for summer work at the Washington Summer Learning Academy, which runs June 4–28: Tiffany Mata, Whitney Cotton, Tabitha Carothers and Pam Coffman.

The Longfellow Summer Reading Program will utilize Melissa Maharry, Marisha Hendrick, Audra Olive and Emily Kennedy.

The district is switching student information and accounting programs. Their previous vendor is merging with another firm. The district will use the MAS system, which has about 85 percent of the schools signed up in Oklahoma.


The board approved a request of Bible Baptist Church to rent a school bus to take students to church camp. The church has done this for several years.
