Barbara (Breford) Littlefield was born in Alva, Oklahoma, on August 27, 1927, to Earnest and Lorena Breford. The oldest of four children, she was raised in Alva, Oklahoma, and graduated from Northwestern Sate College with an English and Arts degree in May of 1949.

As a teenager, she helped with the family auto and oil business, keeping books and accounting. Barbara was a certified lifeguard, working at the local community pool in Alva.

Barbara married Melvin Littlefield in August of 1949; the family moved to Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, shortly after to farm and ranch.
