MONTICELLO, Ark. – After finding itself in a large first-half deficit, the Northwestern Oklahoma University football team scored 29 second-half points in a comeback bid that fell short to Arkansas-Monticello 44-36 Saturday night.

Due to anticipated field conditions, the game was moved from UAM's home field to Hyatt Field, home of Monticello High School. Unfortunately, the weather effected Saturday's contest with the game starting 57 minutes after the scheduled time due to lightning delays during pregame.

Northwestern's record fell to 0-2 on the season as the Rangers dropped their first two games by getting to within one possession in each contest. The Rangers return home for Week 3 of the season as the host Henderson State (1-1) at Ranger Field at 6 p.m.

UAM earned its first win of the season to move to 1-1.

Trailing the Boll Weevils 30-7 at halftime, the Rangers offense came alive for more than 300 yards of offense in the final 30 minutes of play on their way to a total of 534 yards. Much of that success was highlighted by the work of Jacob Peyton who carried the ball 19 times for 162 yards.

The Rangers torched UAM defense for a total of 271 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Isaiah Weed accounted for 338 yards of total offense with 263 yards on 21-for-37 passing and three touchdowns through the air, and 75 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Gavin Garner had a big day catching the ball with Weed connecting with him eight times for 144 yards and two touchdowns, and Justin Caincaught four balls for 55 yards and a touchdown.

The Northwestern defense kept the high-powered Boll Weevil offense at bay in the second half, led by the work of Maurice Wright Jr. and Dakota Driskill. The linebacker duo had 15 and 12 tackles, respectively. Marcus Brent had a nice game with nine tackles and a huge fourth quarter sack that forced the Boll Weevils to put the ball late.

One of the biggest plays of the game on the offensive side came with 10 minutes to go in the when Garner went up and made a grab in the middle of the field and walked into the end zone for a 48-yard touchdown play to make it 44-28.

After forcing the Boll Weevils to punt, the Rangers ran nine plays for 67 yards in 2:37 of play that was capped off by a Weed to Cain connection from 23 yards out. Weed then hooked up with Jamar Morris to bring the score to its ultimate 44-36 outcome.

UAM quarterback Cole Sears struggled by his standards, completing 14-of-27 pass for 243 yards and a touchdown.

The Rangers turned the ball over three times in the game.
