Soccer: Texas A&M International downs Eagles

September 21, 2018

OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 20, 2018) – Four Texas A&M International players each scored a goal as the Dustdevils beat Oklahoma Christian 5-0 on Thursday night at the Eagle Soccer Field.

It was a night of bad fortune for OC (3-4, 1-2 Heartland Conference), as the injury riddled Eagles hung close until the final 20 minutes before surrendering three late goals to TAMIU (3-2-1, 2-1).

Cem Izgec put the Dustdevils ahead in the third minute and TAMIU went ahead 2-0 on an own goal by the Eagles in the 31st minute as an OC player tried to clear a corner kick by TAMIU.

Despite being outshot 22-5, OC had two prime scoring chances. In the final minute of the first half, Matheus Mantovani sent a well-struck free kick from about 25 yards out low to the ground, but TAMIU goalkeeper Carlos Herrera got down to make the stop.

In the first minute of the second half, Diego Vazquez sent a screamer toward the goal from near the edge of the penalty box, forcing Herrera into a full-out dive to his left to keep the ball out of the net.

Rafael Montabes, Elias Perales and Abraham Salazar scored in the 74th, 88th and 89th minutes, respectively, for TAMIU.

Herrera made three saves, while OC goalkeeper Anthony Trabichet had six saves.

Four Eagles made their season debuts in the game – Ignacio Barboza, Jeremy Martinez, Christian Womack and Michael Young.

OC is scheduled to host No. 11-ranked St. Mary's (Texas) on Saturday at 1 p.m., although that game could be postponed until Sunday if expected storms on Friday drop heavy rain on the area. Watch and the OC Athletics Twitter account (@OCEagles) for more information as it develops.
