Ranger Football's Driskill, Smith receive Week 11 conference honors

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Fresh off a dominating performance against Southwestern Oklahoma State this past weekend in Weatherford, the Great American Conference has recognized Dakota Driskill and Horatio Smith as players of the week, the conference announced on Monday.

Both performers played key roles in the Northwestern Oklahoma State University's (NWOSU) 35-14 victory at Southwestern. Smith and Driskill each scored back-to-back non-offensive touchdowns to spearhead a 28-point second quarter to break the game open.

Smith was honored by the conference as the Special Teams Player of the Week. Playing in his last game in a Ranger uniform, Smith put the first NWOSU touchdown on the board when he took a Southwestern punt 75 yards to the end zone for a score. He finished the game the game with 95 yards on three punt returns, as well as an outstanding receiving day with six catches for 111 yards.


Smith's punt return was the first such return for a touchdown by a Northwestern specialist since the 2011 season. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown during week four action at Southeastern Oklahoma State.

The Amarillo, Texas, native closed the season tied with the most punt return yards in the conference with 151, and was third in the league in All-Purpose yards.

Driskill was recognized for his play as the Defensive Player of the Week. Already known as one of the top tacklers in the league, it was a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown that gave the Rangers the league for good against the Bulldogs in the second quarter.

A redshirt junior from Goddard, Kansas, Driskill finished the game with eight tackles, seven of which were solo tackles, and two tackles for loss. Driskill finished the year ninth in the NCAA and second in the conference with 121 total tackles on the season, the second most by a Ranger in the Division II era.
