Alva man accused of assault, kidnapping

December 23, 2018

A felony arrest warrant has been issued against an Alva man on charges of domestic abuse and kidnapping.

On Dec. 18 in Woods County, Dakota Cheyenne McKinley, 22, of Alva has been charged with domestic abuse – assault and battery – second/subsequent offense and with kidnapping.

The domestic abuse charge carries a punishment of up to four years imprisonment and/or a fine of $5,000. The kidnapping charge is punishable by imprisonment for up to 20 years.

According to court records, on Sunday, Dec. 16, Alva Police Officer William Shahan was dispatched to Share Medical Center for a report of a possible assault. He met with staff who said they had a young woman in a room who had been assaulted by her ex-boyfriend, the father of her children.

Shahan observed the woman, identified as Trishell Reed, had a swollen left upper lip. Hospital staff told him she had received five stitches in her lip.

Reed explained that she and Dakota McKinley had been at the apartment. He was arguing with her and yelling at her, and she kept trying to ignore him. At some point Reed said she yelled back at him, and he hit her in the face, striking her in the mouth and busting open her lip on the inside causing her to bleed.

Reed said McKinley started freaking out and kept her in the bedroom of the apartment and wouldn’t let her leave. Reed said she just sat in the room and stayed off her phone in fear he would hit her more. After about 30 minutes, he let her out to go to the bathroom to stop the bleeding and take care of her lip.

Around 4:30 p.m. McKinley’s grandmother arrived to let Reed and McKinley see their two minor children and take them to Walmart to get groceries. Reed said McKinley kept trying to talk about what had happened, and she kept telling him to stop talking and drop it. After the two returned to the apartment, they took in the groceries and went to put the kids in the car. While Reed was placing one of her children in the car, McKinley got mad and struck her in the back of the head. Both minor children were present at the time of the assault.

Officer Shahan attempted to locate McKinley. He went to the grandmother’s residence, but she said he was not there and she didn’t know where he was. The grandmother called McKinley and said Shahan wanted to talk to him. She said McKinley told her he would come to the house once his ride arrived.

After waiting an hour, Shahan asked the grandmother to call McKinley again. This time he told his grandmother he was not coming there because he knew he was going to jail. Shahan spoke to him on the phone and asked why he said that. Shahan said he wanted to hear what McKinley had to say about the incident. McKinley told Shahan he would meet him at the jail and turn himself in after he took care of a few things. He did not show up at the jail and would not answer his phone.

A criminal history check showed McKinley had been arrested in November 2017 for aggravated domestic assault and battery and that the victim was Reed. The history showed that McKinley was found guilty for domestic assault and battery in the presence of a minor.
