Late Home Runs Help Reddies Split at Ouachita

March 28, 2019

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Reddies got home runs from Ashlyn Taylor, Madie Green, and Cecily Rodriguez, as Henderson State came from behind to defeat rival Ouachita Baptist in the second game of a mid-week doubleheader on Tuesday evening.

Helping the Reddies salvage the afternoon was freshman pitcher Monica Monreal, who threw 4 1/3 innings of scoreless ball to keep HSU within striking distance. Monreal's first appearance in more than two weeks turned into the first win of her career.

Henderson's bats were held in check in the first half of the doubleheader, as the Reddies fell 3-1 in the afternoon's opening game.

The Reddies (18-16, 12-10) will finish their 10-game road swing with two doubleheaders at East Central scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Game Two: Henderson State 9, Ouachita Baptist, 6

After scoring just one run in the first contest, it took two at-bats for the Reddies to equal their scoring output in the second game of the series. Depsite losing 3-1 in the opener, HSU stayed aggressive, and in the top of the first, Cecily Rodriguez broke the seal with a solo shot to centerfield that put the Reddies up 1-0. Kailey Reese doubled the lead later in the inning when she singled back up the box to score Abbie Moore and give HSU a 2-0 advantage.

After three-straight doubles helped the Lady Tigers tie the game in the bottom of the second, Reese came up clutch once more. Following a single and a sacrifice bunt from Monreal that sent Moore to second, Reese put the Reddies in front with a single to left field, scoring Moore to make the score 3-2, Henderson.

For the second time however, the Reddies were unable to maintain the lead, as OBU scored four in the bottom of the third inning to pull in front 6-3.

Despite facing a three-run deficit for the second time in as many games, the Reddies battled back with two in the top of the fourth. With two outs and the bases empty, Alyssa Dixon and Rodriguez reached base, putting pressure on the Lady Tigers. The pressure was turned up by Moore, who reached on an error by the Ouachita infield which allowed both Dixon and Rodriguez to score. The two runs sliced OBU's lead down to 6-5.

Monreal settled into a groove on the mound and worked quickly to give the Reddies another chance to tie or take the lead. Taylor rewarded her fellow freshman in the sixth with a lead-off home run to left field, which knotted the score at 6-6. Two batters later, HSU would complete the comeback as Dixon scored on a fielder's choice to put HSU in front, 7-6. Moments later, Monreal helped her own cause with an RBI bunt to score Rodriguez, giving HSU an important insurance run and an 8-6 advantage.

Looking to put the game out of reach, the Reddies went deep to lead-off the second-straight inning, as Green sent one over the left field fence to extend the lead to 9-6. Monreal worked a perfect seventh and picked up her first win while striking out two and walking just one batter.

Game One: Ouachita Baptist 3, Henderson State 1

The Tigers capitalized on early mistakes from HSU to win the first game of the doubleheader 3-1.

Back-to-back errors and a walk set the table for OBU in the second inning, and the Lady Tigers capitalized with a bases-loaded, two-RBI single to take an early 2-0 lead. Ouachita pushed one more across with an infield single and led 3-0 after two frames.

HSU put the leadoff hitter on base in both the third and the fourth inning, but were unable to plate a run as the contest passed its midway point.

Reddies' starting pitcher Michelle Sorensen did an admirable job of keeping Henderson in the game despite finding herself in trouble several times. Although HSU was able to scratch across one run in the top of the seventh on a fielder's choice and an error, but the Reddies were unable to rally all the way back, as the Lady Tigers took the opener, 3-1.
