At a special meeting of the Burlington School Board last Thursday, the board accepted the resignation of Principal Lane Pruett and his wife Kirsten Pruett, teacher and longtime coach of the Lady Elks.

A call to Principal Pruett found the couple will be employed by Cherokee Public Schools. Pruett said he will teach there and she will teach and coach.

Board President Terry Graham called the special meeting of the Burlington Board of Education to order May 16 at 1 p.m. The meeting started with just three board members present, but eventually all but one attended: T.J. Rockenbach, April Kisling and Aaron Smith. Robert Hill was absent. Also at the meeting was: Superintendent Dr. Stacey Croft, Principal Lane Pruett, and Minutes Clerk Tamre McGinnis.

The board also approved the resignation of Kristen Sciara, a para. The board also authorized Dr. Croft to pursue real property to purchase. These decisions were made following executive sessions.

For the new Burlington Bus Barn project, the following attended: Christian Ballard with Boynton Williams, Neil Morehead with Morehead Construction and Eric Westfahl with Redhawk Construction.

Three bids were received. Christian Ballard read each of the bids: Brad Rieger of Rieger Welding LLC: base bid of $577,368, no bond in place, 210 calendar days; bid from Eric Westfahl of Redhawk Construction, base bid of $854,000, bond in place, 121 calendar days; and Neil Morehead of Morehead Construction, base bid of $860,000 bond in place, 134 calendar days.

The board agreed to table the bids to the regularly scheduled meeting which was to be on Monday, May 20. However, due to the threatening weather forecast for Monday evening, the board rescheduled the meeting for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
