RSU's Raquel Flores Shoots School Record to Lead Women's Golf's Record-Setting Day

September 26, 2019

AXTELL, Neb. – Sophomore Raquel Flores set a new school record with a 6-under par 66 on day two of the MIAA Fall Preview at Awarii Dunes to lead the way for Rogers State, which broke a team record, as both Flores and the Hillcats climbed the leaderboard to finish in second place.

The -6 for Flores set a new school record for the best individual round in Rogers State history, breaking the previous mark of -3, previously held by Jess Whitting and Mica Eastin (twice). Flores's previous best round at the collegiate level was a one-under-par round of 72 last season.

In her record-setting round, Flores carded seven birdies and pulled off an eagle on the par-5 14th hole. Starting on the back nine, Flores shot par on the opening whole and then reeled off three straight birdies on 11, 12 and 13 before eagling the 14th. She would bogey 17 but then birdied the 18th hole to close out the opening nine holes at -5. Flores then birdied holes one and four. After a bogey on seven, she birdied eight to go back to seven under for the round. However, her par putt to end the tournament rimmed out as she dropped back to -6 with the bogey.

Flores, who was +5 to start the day, jumped 14 spots in the round to finish second overall at -1 for the 36-hole tournament with a score of 143. Her 36-hole tournament score also tied for the fourth best tournament in school history for the Hillcats and broke her previous collegiate best of 154 by 11 shots.

Flores was one of four Hillcats to improve on day two of the event, helping Rogers State shoot a team score of one-under par at 287. The -1 round of 287 broke the team record for an individual round in school history by four shots. The previous best round was a +3 round of 291 in the third round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic on September 16, 2014.

The team started the day in fifth place at +22. The Hillcats climbed into a tie with Sioux Falls at +21 for the two-day event, finishing with a 597. Rogers State's 36-hole score was also tied for the fourth best tournament score in program history.

Jessica Green had a strong day for the Hillcats and finished second overall for Rogers State after shooting a season-best round of 72 to finish even for the day. For her round, Green carded four birdies on the opening nine holes and then two more in the remainder of the round. Green climbed seven spots to finish in 11th overall with a +6 score of 150.

Another season best was turned in today by senior Sydney Murray, who matched her career best round of 73, to finish +1 on Wednesday. Murray had 15 pars in the second round and finished her day with a birdie. Murray climbed 13 spots on the leaderboard to finish in 20th overall with a 153 over two days.

Marybeth Bellnap finished up the scoring for the Hillcats on Wednesday, dropping two shots off of her opening-round 78 to finish at +4 in the second round with a 76. Bellnap finished in 23rd overall with a tournament score of 154 at +10.

Mariana Flores finished off her tournament with a +11 round of 83. Flores opened up the tournament with a 77 but fell to finish 37th overall in the 66-golfer field.

Rogers State will have a week off before returning to action on October 7 and 8 with the Midwest Classic Golf Tournament hosted by Central Missouri at the Mules National Golf Club in Warrensburg, Missouri.
