Active Covid cases double in Woods County

One week ago, Woods County had 20 active cases of Covid-19 according to Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) reports. This week OSDH is reporting 41 positive cases in the county. Of those cases, 35 are in the Alva zip code while five are at Waynoka and one is listed for Freedom. Dacoma has no cases.

The state map of color-coded risk levels shows 69 counties, including Woods County, in the "orange" risk level. Six are in the "yellow" risk level and only two are in the "green" level. Risk levels step from green for the lowest risk to yellow to orange and finally red. No counties are currently at the highest red level. The current green and yellow counties are located in the panhandle and western counties of the state. Harper and Woodward counties, which border Woods, are in the yellow level.

As of Wednesday, the state of Oklahoma had 15,540 active cases of Covid-19. At 41, Woods County has more cases than any surrounding counties. Woodward County has 20, Major County 15, Alfalfa County 10 and Harper County 4. Garfield County, which includes Enid, has 131 active cases.


According to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections website, Bill Johnson Correctional Center in Alva currently has no positive cases. Northwestern Oklahoma State University also reported no positive cases on its three campuses as of July 31.

As students return to school, several clinics have been set up to offer free Covid vaccinations to students, faculty and staff. Northwest Technology Center in Alva will hold a free vaccination clinic Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. Northwestern Oklahoma State University will offer a vaccination clinic to students, faculty, staff and family members on Aug. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.


On Wednesday, the three-day average of hospitalizations showed the health department's northwest region, including Woods County, had 26 people hospitalized with Covid and eight in ICU beds. The total hospitalizations for the state were listed at 810, including 36 pediatric hospitalizations. There were 236 in ICU. These hospitalizations do not include focus, rehabilitation and tribal facilities.
