Ramblings of a Redneck Farmer

Lottery dreams and what we really need

November 11, 2022

If you are like me, you know, as I finish writing this on Sunday night, the sixth, that the Powerball Lottery has stretched itself to $1.9 billion. If you do a quick Google search you will find out that at least 132 countries that spin with us on this planet have a GDP less than somebody will win, whenever the correct numbers are drawn. I don’t know what stupid money is, but I am guessing that is stupid money.

Yes, I know your chances of winning and mine too are like 1:292,000,000. However, that doesn’t stop us all from at least spending a minute thinking about how we would spend that kind of money. What would you do with that kind of money? I would tithe. I would help take care of family and friends. I would set up a foundation to not only help those in need, but organizations in need as well. I’d buy a couple of ranches. I’d invest in our communities. Then I’d put a ton in the bank. My crazy money would be spent on a Plymouth Roadrunner. I’ve always wanted one of those cars.

So, I will spend a few dollars tomorrow and pick up a couple lines of numbers, all the while knowing a snowball in Hades has a better chance than me winning Powerball tomorrow night. It is always fun to dream a little about things like that.

It is a little funny to me to me, though, how arrogant and how disenchanted we in this country always seem to be. We are never happy with what we have. We are always after the bigger and better whatever. It isn’t any wonder why a lot of foreigners think we are a bunch of smug Americans. I have told the story often of the show that went to Mexico City to tape a show and ran into a farmer who talked the crew into coming back to his hacienda. Well, his hacienda was a stick hut. He spent time showing them his tank he raised fish in and the little pallet pens he had his pigs in. He smiled a toothless grin every time they moved to a different part of his yard. He had nothing yet he had everything. If we had facilities like he had, we wouldn’t be showing them off. He knew how blessed he was. Yet, we rarely can see how blessed we are. Most of us have a roof over our head and food to eat. We have a job and a vehicle to get to work. We have toys. We have all that we need and way more than we want most of the time and yet we still aren’t satisfied. Don’t tell me we aren’t a bunch of smug buttheads.

Today, some family came in to see Mom. She has struggled a little lately and it is always a good time to get family together. We did something today that we maybe haven’t done in years. We sat around the table and laughed. I mean big belly laughs. I’m pretty sure some people snorted because they were laughing so hard. We laughed with each other and we laughed at each other. Mom even cracked a couple of laughs which were great to see. Mom had a great time and in all reality that was what it was all about.

We all, including myself, seem to lose focus on what is important. We just don’t know how blessed we really are. I’ve done a lot of thinking about what we did today. Life is so uncertain that you just can’t not take advantage of those opportunities when they present themselves. We had a priceless morning and afternoon.

If I never win the lottery, I’m richer for being around Mom’s table today.

Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

I expect my tickets to show not a winner when I check them Tuesday morning. Yet what a winner we all were today around that table. Isn’t it always a little funny how God knows exactly what you need?

Everyone have a good week and count your blessings.
