Retired Navy nurse Captain Susanne Blankenbaker spoke of her service during Burlington's annual Veterans Days ceremony.

Friday, Nov. 11, Burlington Schools held a Veterans Day program for the community. The band and choir had been practicing for a few weeks.

The band accompanied the students singing the "Star Spangled Banner" and played "God Bless America." The elementary students also provided musical entertainment. A favorite tradition is the "Armed Forces Medley" during which veterans of the various branches stand during the singing of their official fight song.

The seniors all had speaking parts throughout the program. Guest speaker Captain (retired) Susanne Blankenbaker, offered her thanks to the school for such a thoughtful program and spoke to the crowd about her career as a military nurse. She was commissioned in 1997 into the Navy Nurse Corps and retired in September of 2021. She completed several deployments and received numerous medals during her time in service.

After the program, the teachers provided a meal for all the veterans and their families.
