Lady Rangers down the Dawgs

ALVA, Okla. – The Lady Rangers upset Lady Bulldogs Monday in the Rivalry Week game, with a scoring-margin of 33 points over SWOSU. This game was heavily concentrated within the post for the Rangers outscoring the Bulldogs 56-18. Southwestern did not have an answer for the two starting posts Faith Simpson and Camille Thomas, who had combined points of 49 in the win.

This was a season-high for Simpson, who earned double-double with a stellar 31 points and 14 rebounds. The dynamic that radiated throughout Percefull Fieldhouse was a serious boost of energy that the girls used to build momentum. Carly Craig was 7-12 in field goals, shooting 58% and 4-6 in three-pointers rounding out her points to 21. C. Thomas was the third person to score in the double digits, scoring 18 herself.

The season record for Northwestern is now 10-12, and their conference record is 6-12.

First Quarter

The ladies were able to emphasize their post-game right off the bat by consistently feeding the ball down to Faith Simpson and Camille Thomas. They both were each able to get a layup in the first two possessions of the game. Carly Craig drove to the basket earning another layup for the Lady Rangers, tying the score 6-6. Simpson steals the ball from the visitors, and scores put-back layup for Craig's missed shot. Guards continually pushed the ball into the posts as Josena Frame steals ball from the Lady Bulldogs and gets ball to Simpson for another blocked shot. Simpson keeps dominating the post area and draws foul after another layup scored, securing three point play. Craig finds her rhythm at the three-point line and scores her first one of the game, putting the Lady Rangers back into the lead 16-14 at the 1:54 mark. The quarter ended with a layup made yet again in the post by C. Thomas assisted by Frame, making the score 18-14.


Second Quarter

Simpson continued her layup run opening the second quarter with a shot from the block after C. Thomas found an open pocket to pass. Frame gets shots off back-to-back driving to the basket and then taking it outside the three with great pass made by Simpson, putting Lady Rangers up three of the Lady Bulldogs 25-22. C. Thomas retrieves ball from SWOSU for a give-and-go layup with help from Nikya Orange. She is fouled on that drive, sending her to the foul line earning a three-point play. Craig passes the ball inside to C. Thomas, passing it back to Craig on the cut for another layup completed, putting the ladies up 31-25. Timeout is called by the Lady Rangers at the 3:12 mark before the half, and Talayah Thomas while penetrates the key, Simpson is able to seal off her defender getting another basket made on the block. Craig then dumps it off yet again to Simpson but in the high post, scoring jumper in the next possession. SWOSU fouled C. Thomas and she scored her second shot at the end of the half, ending with a score of 38-32 for the Lady Rangers.


Third Quarter

The return from halftime was when Northwestern offensively dominated, scoring 31 points alone within the third quarter, shooting 58% from field-goal range and 75% from the three-point line. Keeping the same pattern as before, Simpson begins the scoring for the Lady Rangers with a layup under the basket. Next possession was possible thanks to steal made by C. Thomas, and after missed shot T. Thomas secures rebound, getting the ball to Craig for an open three-pointer. The ladies ended up going on a 9-0 scoring run just within those first two minutes of the quarter, earning the last two points of the run behind the free throw line by C. Thomas. Fast break made by T. Thomas added two more points to the Lady Rangers score, 49-35. The only block of the game was made by Simpson in the following defensive possession for Northwestern. Two more shots were made by both C. Thomas and Craig, and Craig ended up drawing a foul nailing both shots. Another scoring run was made before Lady Bulldogs were able to find a scoring opportunity, and Orange was able to end the quarter with block shot. Score was 69-45 for Lady Rangers.


Fourth Quarter

Northwestern's post game continued to flourish, nailing another layup on the block by Simpson. Craig earned her fifth assist of the game sealing another great pass down to C. Thomas for put-back. She then steals ball from SWOSU scoring her own fast break basket. Foul is drawn from this shot and her free throw was good, putting Lady Rangers 76-49. Another 13-0 run was made by Northwestern, including Simpson earning over 30 points. Northwestern closed out the victory 88-55 over the Bulldogs.
