Ladybugs overcome first half deficit to win at Woodward

After defeating Woodward 61-39 in Alva on Feb. 7, the Alva Ladybugs traveled to Woodward for a makeup game on Monday. The Lady Boomers led by nine points in the first quarter, but the Ladybugs narrowed the margin in the second. Woodward led 24-22 at halftime. The Ladybugs added 13 points in the third quarter while holding Woodward to six. Scoring was nearly even in the final period with the Ladybugs earning a 43-39 victory.

Scoring for Alva in the first quarter were Lakin Gaddy, Kylie Adair, Carly Argo and Jaycee Kelln. Woodward led 17-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Kelln started off the Ladybug scoring in the second quarter. Then Argo hit a basket and two treys. Morgan Heath finished out the Alva scoring. With 14 points for the period while Woodward had seven, the Ladybugs trailed by two, 24-22, at halftime.

The Alva girls continued to out-score the Lady Boomers in the third quarter. Gaddy stepped up her game with three treys and a basket. Heath added the other basket for the Ladybugs. Alva led 35-30 at the end of three quarters.


In the final period, Woodward scored nine points to eight for Alva. Kellen had a basket plus a free throw. Gaddy and Hadlee Ohm scored two points each, and Heath made one free throw. The final was Alva 43, Woodward 39.

Gaddy led the Alva scoring with 17 points while Argo had ten. Kelln finished with seven and Heath with five. Adair and Ohm each had two points.

Woodward was led by Thessaly Pfeifer and Jocelyn Treece with 11 points each followed by Briley Douglas-Fischer with ten. Riley Moore had four points, Averi Edwards two and Khloe Clemence one.


The win completed the regular season for the Ladybugs who are 20-3 for the season. Alva will host Newkirk for the 3A District 1 game Saturday night at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to regionals at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at Perry. The loser will continue in the consolation bracket of regionals to play at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Perry.
