Alva Ladybugs cruise to win over Berryhill

After a loss Saturday against Luther in regionals, the Ladybugs must win every game to keep advancing. The Alva girls took on the Berryhill Maidens in the first round of area playoffs at Enid Thursday afternoon. The Ladybugs jumped out to lead 17-2 in the first quarter and retained a 13 point lead, 26-13, going into halftime. With a 43-18 margin at the end of three quarters, the Ladybugs had an easy final period, bringing players off the bench and winning 56-29.

The Ladybugs scored first in the game with Addie Coon tying the score at two for Berryhill. Alva racked up 15 more points while the Maidens were unable to score again. Carly Argo hit two three-point shots and a basket to lead Alva with eight points for the quarter. Lakin Gaddy added a basket and two free throws. Jaycee Kelln scored on a basket while Morgan Heath added a couple of free throws and Kylie Adair contributed one foul shot.


The Berryhill Maidens managed 11 points in the second quarter while Alva scored only nine, but the Ladybugs continued to hold a comfortable lead. Kelln and Ohm scored on baskets for the Ladybugs with Ohm contributing two free throws along with one from Gaddy. At halftime, Alva led 26-13.

The third quarter belonged to the Ladybugs who scored 17 points while holding the Maidens to five. Gaddy had a good quarter with nine points off a trey, two baskets and two free throws. Ohm made two baskets. Kelln had a basket and a free throw, and Adair added a free throw. The Alva team led 43-18 going into the final period.

The Ladybugs scored 13 points in the fourth quarter while Berryhill had 11. Gaddy and Adair each made two baskets while Heath added a basket and a couple of free throws. As Coach Kris Gore emptied the bench, Randee Perks had her chance at the foul line, making one of two free throws.

The Ladybugs are now 23-4 for the season. They will take on the winner of the game between Perry and KIPP Tulsa at 1:30 p.m. today (Friday) in Enid. The winner of that game will advance to the area final at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The Alva Ladybugs were led in scoring by Gaddy with 20 points followed by Ohm and Argo with eight points each. Kelln had seven points while Adair and Heath made six apiece. Perks had one.

The Berryhill Maidens were led by Coon with 13 points followed by Liberty Hamilton with five and Mackenzie Duncan with four. Daizy Winningham had three and Adley Craig two.
