True love acts

February 9, 2024

Many search and look, often without success, for simple true love. True love is defined as a love that demands action. It is not only expressed in words; it moves to action. If you love someone, you will not only say it but act. Love always manifests itself in action.

Soon, we will celebrate love. We will send flowers, cards, and candy to those we love. We will express our love to those who are precious to us. Valentine's Day is a wonderful time to demonstrate our love in action. It is often true love in action.

It is wonderful that we are reminded to express our love to those we love. We all understand that we should act on this love year-round. What about our love for God? Have you ever considered how you express your love to the Heavenly Father? Often, we do not express this love because we do not understand His love for us.

Consider God’s love for you. If there is one thing the Bible tries to communicate to you, it is that God loves you. Remember, true love demands action. There is no greater example of true love than what God did with His Son. The Bible tells us, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). How can anyone say that God does not love them when we have the Cross? Consider the Cross; God sent His Son to die on that Cross for OUR sins. We should all hang on that Cross for our sins, but God set us aside and placed His only Son on it in our place. What love He has for us! How can you not love the One who willingly sacrificed Himself for you?

Another reason we do not express our love for the One who died for our sins is simply because we are in love with other things that steal our love for God. There are times when you and I must choose what to love and what to hate. My wife is my sole love; I could never love another woman. The same is true with God. Christ said, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other...” (Matthew 6:24). The Bible tells us simply that we can only have one passion in life and that ought to be God. Your single love ought to be the Savior, not this world and its sins. We are told in the Bible, “... lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God...” (II Timothy 3:4). We live in a world that does not love God. This world has traded the love of God for the love of pleasure and this sinful world. Think about it: we spend more on entertainment than we give to God. We get more excited about a football game or a television show than we do about God. We will miss the attendance of the house of God on a Sunday for a sale at a store, a golf game or hunting. These are examples of how our love does not show action. Is our love for God that shallow? Remember that true love demands action. How do you show your love to God? You must choose to love Him and the choice to set aside things that might interfere with this love for Him.

I hope you will put your love into action this coming Sunday. Show those you love that you truly mean it. But don’t forget God. Place your love in action as He did. Get yourself to God's house, join with His people, and worship the One who loves you as no other.
