The Woods County Tax Roll Corrections Board met Monday morning to consider corrections totaling a $469 reduction in county taxes. Board members present for the meeting were County Commissioner Randy McMurphy, County Assessor Renetta Benson and member Joe Shirley. County Clerk Shelley Reed was also present to keep the minutes.

After minutes of the Dec. 18 special meeting were approved, the board members looked at four changes to the tax roll resulting in small reductions in taxes and one change with no difference in taxes. Each of the changes includes the school district where the change is located, and each was approved in separate action by the board members.

Pitney Bowes had a reduction of $4 in taxes in the Alva School District for items to be taken off the roll and not reported to the assessor earlier. Pitney Bowes also had a reduction in taxes of $6 in the Waynoka School District for the same reason.

Benson said her office had a problem with their computer system that resulted in some double taxation. Some items were to be removed from real estate and moved to personal taxes, but they weren’t deducted from real estate. She presented a couple of instances where her office didn’t locate and fix the error. Dennis Haltom in the Alva School District had his taxes reduced by $123 due to this double tax error.

In a similar situation, John and Lecena McDowell in the Waynoka School District had their taxes reduced by $336 due to the double tax error.

The board members also acknowledged the change in ownership on a property in the Waynoka district on a sheriff’s deed that was missed in a clerical error. This had no effect on the amount of taxes.
