Ranger softball sweeps doubleheader over Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Northwestern Oklahoma State Softball was on the road in Alamosa, Colorado, against Adams State winning both Tuesday afternoon games. The Rangers won the first game 7-3 before using a five run sixth inning to steal game two with the comeback.

The two wins improve the Rangers to 4-2 on the season, all games coming non-conference.

Game 1

Northwestern was led by Avery Clark and Kaitlyn Corn with two hits each in the game for team highs. Beth Denney had the game winning hit with an RBI single to give the Rangers the 4-3 lead. Hannah Howell threw a complete game striking out six while allowing two earned runs.

The Rangers opened the scoring with two early runs in the first inning as after a leadoff double by Macy Spearman, Avery Clark followed with an RBI single to right field for the 1-0 lead. Kaitlyn Corn followed with an extra base hit as she drilled a triple to right field scoring Rachel Sherwood for the 2-0 lead. Howell faced the minimum in the bottom half of the first inning as a double play ball closed out the inning.


After a scoreless top of the inning, Adams State responded with a run in the second inning to cut the deficit in half as the Rangers led 2-1 after the RBI single. Howell picked up her second strikeout in as many innings as the Rangers held a 2-1 lead.

Adams State offense kept the pressure on as in the third inning took advantage of a Ranger error to plate two runs to take their first lead of the game at 3-2 over Northwestern through three innings.

The home team's lead lasted into the fifth inning when the Rangers offense struck back. Avery Clark led off with a double to right center before Rachel Sherwood followed Clark with a double of her own for an RBI tying hit to bring the score to 3-3.


After Adams State pushed two runners on base following two singles, Howell closed the door on the inning with a strikeout looking to end the inning and keep the game tied.

Northwestern, holding the momentum, kept it rolling into the sixth inning as Howell led off with a double before Beth Denney hit an RBI single to center field driving in Ashley Low who pinch ran to give the Rangers a 4-3 lead.

In the 7th inning the Rangers added three more runs in the inning after Sherwood and Corn reached safely to start the inning Shyanna Stopp reached on a throwing error allowing two runs to score. The final run came on a Howell line out for a sacrifice fly to score Sanchez. The Rangers led 7-3 heading into the final half inning.


Adams State had one hit in the inning but Howell and the Rangers worked around the single not allowing any damage done and closed out the 7-3 victory behind seven innings of work from the Ranger starter.

Game 2

Northwestern used a strong sixth inning to pull off the comeback win trailing 5-2 to take a 7-5 lead in the inning.

In the opening part of the game it was Adams State who struck first with an early run after a lead-off batter’s back-to-back strikeouts set up two outs; however, two straight singles led to a 1-0 Adams State lead.

The Rangers’ offense struck in the second inning for two runs as the Rangers had their first two runners on base before Avery Clark delivered a bases-loaded single to center field scoring Rivera and Anderson for a 2-1 Ranger lead.


Adams State put runners on base before Dolan worked around the jam after a runner got in scoring position before a ground out back to the mound to end the inning with a 2-1 Ranger lead through two innings.

The home team struck in the third inning with an RBI single following a Vegila triple down the right field line tying the game at 2-2. Rangers escaped further damage until the fourth inning.

With the game still even at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning Adams State had a 2-run home run by Vargas give them a 4-2 lead over the Rangers.

Adams State scored for the third straight inning on a sacrifice fly following the team's second triple of the afternoon. The Rangers’ offense struck in the sixth, answering back.

After a lead-off double from Shyanna Stopp, and an Ashley Low sacrifice bunt for first and third Alyssa Baldenegro hit an RBI single. This was followed by an RBI single by Avery Clark, her third hit of the game. A Rachel Sherwood triple pushed it to a 6-5 lead which was extended when Sherwood scored on a sacrifice fly by Corn for a 7-5 lead.

In the seventh and final inning Adams State had the lead-off runner on off a single before putting the tying run on base and winning run at the plate but Ireland Caro worked around the jam on a ground out and line out to seal the doubleheader sweep.

Rangers was back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 14, with two games against Colorado State Pueblo.
