Sterling steps into politics

Sterling Stewart speaks during a legislative session while serving as a senate page at the Oklahoma State Capitol.

Recently, senior Sterling Stewart went on a trip to the Oklahoma State Capitol. He served as a Senate page Feb. 19–22. While there he spent most of his time at the Capitol building doing things like distributing bills, attending committee meetings, getting things that the senators needed, and distributing "pink slips" (messages from lobbyists) to the senators during the meetings.

There were five pages including Sterling. The pages worked from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day except for the day that they did a mock legislative meeting. During the mock session, the pages pretended to be senators and had to get the other pages to pass a bill. Sterling said he enjoyed learning about the legislative process. When asked why he wanted to be a page, Stewart said he is interested in politics and wanted to get to know the senators.
