Spirited debates on Facebook

March 15, 2024

Sometimes I have spirited debates with some of my Facebook friends over political and social issues.

You who know me are probably saying “DUH” right about now. What you may not know is I only post about 15 percent of what goes through my head.

Other times the Holy Spirit tells me before I click the post button that I need to just delete the post. Please don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying I am a good person or that only posting about 15 percent of what goes through my head makes me a saint.

Numerous times the Holy Spirit has told me what I am going to post is not beneficial to anyone, including myself, and I click that post button as hard as I can, like hitting that button extra hard is going to make the people I am posting in response to “get it” any better.

Time was I didn’t care. I mean, I would argue with a brick wall and was certain that I had one.

Sometimes debating with someone of the opposite party is like arguing with a brick wall and just as successful, even when a topic is so easily refuted. Prior to February 2021, I’d make several political comments on Facebook daily. I am shocked that I never had to serve time in Facebook jail, not that my comments were wrong or outlandish or mean spirited. I had the facts behind me, which seem to be contrary to Facebook’s freedom of speech rhetoric.

These days I don’t post near as much about politics or politicians. When something really burns my wagon I’ll post something, like about the debacle of a State of the Union Address like we witnessed this past week. However usually, I just let those things pass, because in the end, we aren’t changing the opposition’s minds, even with the facts. All they can see is somebody taking away rights when in fact, we stand with the unborn in the case of abortion.

I grew up with a Dad who, when he walked the Capitol halls, walked into any office and was greeted with, “How’s Fred today?” I loved the interaction on a state level between representatives and senators and their constituents. Sadly, that is not the case today. I have lost almost all the respect I ever had for an elected official and I’m not the only person.

According to an ABC News poll out Sunday morning, about a third of those polled today are going to vote for Biden, a third are going to vote for Trump and a third can’t believe those are the two choices. I really think that poll is quite close to the conscience of America. How are those two individuals our choices for President?

In a head-to-head race, I have to vote for Trump, yet I am most undoubtedly in the last group of people of that poll that is not happy with our choices.

So, I will most likely make posts that will still annoy my leftish friends because they somehow think that I believe Trump is the greatest thing since sliced bread, when I have never given them enough ammo of the like to load a BB gun.

Instead, I will try and listen to the Holy Spirit and click post when I need to post and hit the delete key when my words need erased. I’m sure I will fail on that quite frequently though. After all Jesus died for my sins too.

Let us all have the knowledge to know what really matters and what doesn’t, all the while trusting in Jesus’ word and resting in the arms of our Lord.

I have a sneaky feeling when I get to Heaven and have my face to face with Jesus, he is going to tell me I got some things right, and there are some he will tell me that I wasn’t even in the right ballpark. The other side of the aisle needs to remember that too.

Matthew 24:35 reads, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my word will never pass away.”

To me that makes it pretty plain that God’s word is law. Sometimes we all need reminded of that.

Talk to you next week.
