  • Let's study the Bible

Kim Barker, College Hill Church of Christ|Apr 29, 2022

Hebrews 11 is about faith, beginning with a definition. “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Is faith important? Verse 6 says, “without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God, must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11 is full of people of faith. Faith is more than belief in God, that God exists. It must include the idea that God will reward those who seek him, diligently. We cannot please God by accident, or in ignoran...

  • Speech mannerisms

    Arden Chaffee|Apr 29, 2022

Illeism: The act of referring to oneself in the third person singular. Bob Dole, the late U.S. Senator from Russell, Kansas, was a famous Illeist. He ran for president in 1996 and often used the third person in his speeches and this trait became known as “Doleisms.” He is quoted: “Bob Dole is a doer, not a talker.” Some people found it annoying, but when he referred to himself, listeners thought he was trying to increase his name recognition. It is interesting to note that speech manneri...

Most of us, I believe, have some concept of what a desert looks like. Many of us have seen some of them – if not personally, at least in the movies. We have a few of them in the United States. The Great Basin, for example, which includes most of Nevada and western Utah, covers approximately 190,000 square miles of land. The Mojave Desert, located in the area around where southern California, Nevada, and Arizona meet, is much smaller: slightly under 48,000 square miles. Compared to either of t...

  • Where does it end?

Rev. Drew Kirtley, First Christian Church|Apr 29, 2022

I have a recurring dilemma with my own faith as a Christian. It’s a specific dilemma, but it often happens in different ways. The predicament is that of unlimited grace. A pastor friend of mine had a term he used every now and then. After spending time around someone who was known for testing his patience, he would say, “Some people are E.G.R.,” which stands for “Extra Grace Required.” You know the people in your life. We all do. In fact, we’re all probably E.G.R. for someone else whether we...

    SEAN MURPHY|Apr 29, 2022

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma House has given final approval to a Texas-style abortion ban that prohibits abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy. The bill passed Thursday by the GOP-led House now heads to Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt. He's expected to sign it within days. The bill was immediately challenged in court by abortion rights advocates. The measure prohibits abortions once cardiac activity can be detected in an embryo. Experts say that's typically about six weeks into a pregnancy, before many women know they are pregnant. L...

    Apr 29, 2022

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican lawmakers in Kansas failed Thursday to override Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly's vetoes of measures dealing with transgender athletes and parents' ability to challenge books and other materials in public schools. Both proposals were priorities for conservative legislators and are likely to become issues during Kelly's race for reelection this year. The Senate voted to override Kelly's vetoes of both, but supporters failed to get the necessary two-thirds majorities in the House. One of the measures would have b...

  • GOP ties boost in Kansas school funding to 'open enrollment'

    JOHN HANNA|Apr 29, 2022

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican lawmakers in Kansas on Thursday approved an increase in funding for public schools but tied the extra money to allowing parents to send their children to any school with room for them. The measure passed by the GOP-controlled Legislature and sent to Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly would boost direct state funding to local school districts by about 6%. The $6.4 billion in funding for 2022-23 complies with past Kansas Supreme Court rulings in a lawsuit filed against the state in 2010 by school districts. The votes w...

JOHN HANNA and ANDY TSUBASA FIELD|Apr 29, 2022

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas is moving to phase out the nation's second-highest state sales tax on groceries, but Republican lawmakers aren't planning to lower consumers' bills until after Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly faces reelection in November. Eliminating the 6.5% tax is Kelly's most visible legislative initiative this year, and she and fellow Democrats have been waging a public campaign for weeks to get the GOP-controlled Legislature to eliminate the whole tax on July 1. The Republican plan would phase out the tax over three years, dropping i...

    WILLIAM J. KOLE and ROSS D. FRANKLIN|Apr 29, 2022

GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) — As Forrest Gump in the Oscar-winning 1994 film of the same name, lead actor Tom Hanks abruptly trots to a halt after more than three years of nonstop running and tells his followers: "I'm pretty tired — I think I'll go home now." Jacky Hunt-Broersma can relate. On Thursday, the amputee athlete achieved her goal of running 102 marathons in as many days, setting an unofficial women's world record. And she can't stop/won't stop, saying she'll run two more for good measure and wrap up her challenge on Saturday with 104. "I...

  • Your dog's personality may have little to do with its breed

    CHRISTINA LARSON|Apr 29, 2022

WASHINGTON (AP) — Research confirms what dog lovers know — every pup is truly an individual. Many of the popular stereotypes about the behavior of golden retrievers, poodles or schnauzers, for example, aren't supported by science, according to a new study. "There is a huge amount of behavioral variation in every breed, and at the end of the day, every dog really is an individual," said study co-author and University of Massachusetts geneticist Elinor Karlsson. She said pet owners love to talk about their dog's personality, as illustrated by...

CINCINNATI (AP) — An Ohio school board outside Cincinnati voted during an emergency meeting on Wednesday to censure a member who said she accidentally posted a link to a pornography site on her campaign's Facebook page. The board for the Lakota Local School District in Liberty Township also asked Darbi Boddy, 41, to resign. She refused. The link she intended to post, she said, was a site about sexual education for teens. The post has since been removed.
