BURLINGTON, Kan. (AP) — Staff members at the Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation near Burlington have located the source of a minor water leak and are working to repair it.
Communications director Jenny Hageman says Wolf Creek personnel identified a cracked weld as the source of the water leak in the reactor cooling system. Staff members are finalizing a repair plan.
Officials had said there was no release of radiation.
"The plant is designed to contain leakage, and there has been no release from the plant," Hageman said. "The plant remains safely shutdown."
The plant was manually shut down around 10 a.m. Friday due to the leak inside the containment area, The Emporia Gazette (http://bit.ly/2c1MB6J) reports.
Hageman says officials had planned to shut down the nuclear plant on Sept. 24 for a maintenance and refueling outage. The plant will be kept offline through the scheduled outage.
"It just makes sense to allow our team to incorporate the weld repair into our outage schedule and focus on completing all of our maintenance activities with precision, so we can safely restart the plant at the end of the outage," said Cleve Reasoner, Wolf Creek site vice president.
