Four Alva High School students accepted to HOBY

The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar has been running since the summer of 1958. Four Alva High School (AHS) sophomores have recently been accepted to attend the June seminar held at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) in Edmond. The students are Stephanie Spellman, Landry Gaddy, Gracie Scarbrough and Karson Henke. Two alternates, Caitlin Hofen and Jake Ervin, were also picked in the scenario that one or two of the campers would not have the ability to attend.

To be accepted to the seminar, high school sophomores must fill out an application complete with their community service hours, any honors or awards they have received, leadership positions they have held or currently hold, and an essay on the most rewarding and challenging aspects of being a leader in their school and community. Only four students may be nominated from each school.

“I learned it is never too early or late to make a difference, and that sometimes not talking can be the best method,” AHS junior Callie Duncan said of her experience at the summer seminar of 2016. At the summer seminars, they teach students how to recognize their leadership talents and find ways to effectively use them in their school and community.
