UAM Women's Basketball outlasts SAGU in OT, 66-64

MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team defeated non-conference opponent Southwestern Assemblies of God University Saturday afternoon in overtime, by a final score of 66-64 inside Steelman Field House.

UAM (4-4, 1-3 GAC) trailed the Lions of SAGU (7-4) at the half in this exhibition match-up by a score of 26-23, but the Blossoms came out firing in the second half of play however. Arkansas-Monticello and the Lions battled closely throughout the remainder of the second half with seven total lead changes in the contest and 13 total ties throughout the game. UAM extended its lead out to five points during the final minute of overtime, but SAGU continued to find an answer on offense with two straight three-pointers to keep pace and tie the Blossoms once again with 00:28 seconds left in the overtime period. Brittnee Broadway went on to hit the game winner on a driving layup to seal the victory at 66-64 by the final buzzer.

Final team statistics on the night for the Blossoms included shooting 49 percent from the field (24-for-49), 43 percent on three-pointers (3-for-7) and 63 percent on free throws (15-for-24). The Lions finished the game at 50 percent from the field (23-for-46), 50 percent beyond the arc (6-for-12) and 63 percent on foul shots (12-for-19).

Offensively Arkansas-Monticello was led by senior Nelsha Peterson with 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field. Peterson also was able to bring down two rebounds and dish out two assists on the day.

Juniors Brittnee Broadway (10), and Treasure Evans (10), along with sophomore Mia Hayes (10) each posted double figures in points in the match-up as well, and Evans recorded four total rebounds.

The Blossoms will hit the court next on Thursday, January 5, 2017 in a Great American Conference showdown with the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene inside Steelman Field House with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
